A train travels on tracks running alongside the highway."},{"label":"Note","value":"The United States Highway System was created in 1925 by the Federal Aid Highway Act, and used uniform numbers and standardized signage along highways.  The program was to be administered by the states, rather than by for-profit private clubs like the American Automobile Association.  U.S. 101 was one of the first highways designated by the Bureau of Public Roads in 1925.  Strung together from older roads, the route originally stretched from San Diego, Ca. to the Canadian border, loosely following the route of historic El Camino Real which linked the Spanish missions, pueblos, and presidios.  In the late 1960s, the route was shortened, ending in downtown Los Angeles.
