Organizers were protesting health care cuts that affected babies of immigrants, and forced sterilization of women of color. The slogan “Healthcare is a right, not a privilege” was coined by this organization. This photograph was taken by Alfonso “Fox” Orozco as part of his East L.A. Unincorporated project. Those photographed, besides Carol, include Barbara Gedanke (ACLU lawyer), Violeta Rappuchi (East Los Angeles Parents’ Corporation and community worker at the East Los Angeles Child and Youth Clinic), and German Ramirez (East Los Angeles Parents’ Corporation).\n\nThis photograph is part of the Ayala family collection. The Ayala family first lived on Naud Street.
