By the 1880s portions of Rancho Los Cerritos were sold, subdivided and developed under the name of Willmore City by William Wilmore in 1882. By 1888, the population had voted to incorporate the city and rename it the City of Long Beach. By the early 20th century, Long Beach had become a popular seaside resort as well as a major shipping port. The 8,000-seat Municipal Auditorium was built in 1931, and was located on the beach adjacent to the Pike's main street. A half-circular Rainbow Pier, surrounding the auditorium and the lagoon, and was built as a breakwater to prevent erosion to the area around the auditorium. The auditorium and band stand were demolished in 1975 to make way for the Long Beach Convention Center complex."},{"label":"Language","value":"eng"},{"label":"Publisher","value":"Los Angeles, Cal.: "},{"label":"Type","value":["Postcards"]},{"label":"Digital Identifier","value":"LML_MS-042-000900001"},{"label":"Object Identifier","value":"LML_MS-042-00090"},{"label":"Geographic Location","value":"Long Beach (Calif.)"},{"label":"Subject","value":"Auditoriums--California--Long Beach; Boats and boating--California--Long Beach;"},{"label":"Title","value":"Municipal auditorium, Long Beach, Calif."},{"label":"Date Range","value":"circa 1931"},{"label":"Source","value":"Department of Archives and Special Collections, William H.
