January 2, 1930 Mr. Francisco Venegas Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico Esteemed and affectionate brother: Today we had the pleasure of receiving your Christmas and New Year greetings, as well as the one you sent to Juan José, which Lola thought was \"precious,\" and also received was the written page you included. All your letters have been received in a timely manner and if I have not answered them it is my fault because I don't make the time, and since I have to do it right here in the \"store,\" there are always interruptions and then the letter is left half-finished. Lola often tries to write to all of you, but you can just imagine her caring for five boys and on top of that there are times when she also has to help me in the store. Sometimes we remember our life over there and we feel like returning very much, but then we remember how our brilliant government leaders treat some of us and then we no longer feel like going back. I have just written to my dad thanking him because he finally decided to have his photograph taken and sent to us, it turned out exactly the way he is, and that is good. You give me news that the status of the houses is now being settled. I hope it is soon to see if they can be sold in order to pay what is owed; and if someone would like to run the store it would be even better because it would then bring a better price. I have not written to any of my creditors nor to the parish priest because it seems to me that they may not want to correspond with me; because in these cases one is treated like those who suffer a contagious disease; no one wants to go near such a person much less extend a helping hand. For those who believe that one will die of hunger if one leaves that \"chicken coop;\" then surely they must believe that God is so small, that outside of their little town He doesn't exist. Unless I were to actually pay all that I owe them, making promises does no good at all. I believe I have not answered your letter written the 13th of November in which you indicate among other things that you have recovered some money which I would like you to give to don Macedonio Martinez on behalf of my compadre Federico. You probably realize by now how our Mexico understands free elections and it suffices to see how this country is treating the elected President [Hoover] to understand our own tragedy. I remain informed of the rest of the points from your letters and I hope you will write as soon as you can find time for it. How are you doing in your jobs? Is Agustin still working? Tell me how things are coming along over there. Business in general, how is it going?"},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1. Subseries A. I believe it will be a good business when there is sufficient peace and good roads, because when it comes to commerce over there it is very competitive; everybody wants to get into this line of business and no one pays attention to industry or other business areas, where there is so much to do (if only there was a good Government). I could send you a bus, even if it were a used one, when my compadre Federico goes and that way my dad would also have his own business if, for example, Nacho would learn to drive. I end this one wishing that this year be one of happy events for all and we hope to get the best possible benefits from the remaining time that God gives us life. How is mother's health?
