Esteemed brother:  You tell me that Don Silviano delivered my letter to you and at the same time told you that the  money I was referring to was available. I would like you to collect said money and keep it for  me, and I don’t know if Don Silviano did not want to give it to you or if you did not think it  convenient to receive it. So once again I ask you to collect it or tell me plainly if he did not want  to give it to you or if you did not want to receive it.  I have three letters to answer you which I have not referred to up to now. A few days ago I sent  you a package with some photos and some herbs, tell me if you have received them.  In your letter dated the 10th of June, you tell me you are now working with don Manuel  González and that Manuel is no longer there. Did he stop working there? And you, how much do  you earn? Tell me if anything is said about me at that place, or if don Manuel still expects me to  pay or does he plan to sell the houses? Is he already in possession of these?  In your letter written the 23rd of June you asked me how much a raincoat would cost, everything  over here is very inexpensive, the only thing is one has to wait for an opportunity to send it with  someone because I am told that it is very costly to ship them over there, but at any rate tell me if  you want me to send you one of my size which I figure must be the same as yours.  There are some that are at the same time a coat, and I think that kind would be convenient; I  believe you know the kind, made of material known as English gabardine and that in Guadalajara  cost $50.00 to $60.00 and here one can buy it for about $20.00 Dollars.  July is almost over and nothing of what was expected since the first of this month has happened  to Mexicans. It was said that due to an amendment to the Immigration Law which became  effective this month, all kinds of violent acts were going to be committed against Mexicans; and  others were expecting that, at the very least, it would be used as a pretext for deporting their  compatriots who live in this country a life of \"tramps\" and who in reality (even though it is sad to  say it), are notorious because they constitute a burden for the State, and also because they have  created a discordant note whose consequences are suffered by the Mexican colony in general.  But in spite of it all, nothing has happened, because the authorities upon explaining said laws  have said that there's nothing to fear and that in reality it’s about facilitating the proceedings for  all of those who entered the country illegally to have an opportunity to get their papers in order. All of this is very sad and  more so due to our bad reputation, when a Mexican comes under the justice system and doesn't  know English, then it really gets very bad, because often it happens that the “paisano” doesn't  have a mother or father nor even a puppy to bark at him and since our consular services are nil,  because they are busy about everything except the well being of the afflicted Mexicans, then I  say the river has indeed taken them. We have to convince ourselves that we are not directly at  fault if they treat us this way here; our Revolutions of nineteen years are at fault because they  have presented a very sad spectacle to this country.  It is true, that over there in our country we have very good people, but it is also true that we have  some very bad ones and these, unfortunately, setting an example at the forefront of the most  important positions: what then can be expected of our dear land? And it's the same everywhere.  And if some hardworking Mexican compatriots do not return to the country it is due to the fear  of being run over the next day [for being a Cristero],37 whereas here in this country much  protection is enjoyed by the honest working man. It is not my intention to recommend exile, but  it is a good idea to note the causes which makes this country great and rich and a place where  people from all parts of the world can remain to live and work peacefully.  I for example only pay $7.50 a year for nine or ten thousand dollars that I sell a year, and this for  the license and another $7.50 for taxes for the schools, which as you know I don't take advantage  of, but I have the right to do so.  One ought to recognize virtue wherever it may be: imagine a procession with the Blessed  Sacrament through the streets of this city, in perfect order and the police directing the traffic; the  people singing and formed along the middle of the street 4 or 6 blocks long, and a blessing being  given at each altar set up by the people outside their homes.
