It was established by the United States Government in 1888 as the Pacific branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers.  Santa Monica founders John P. Jones and Robert S. Baker donated 300 acres and $50,000 for the new facility, which was designed by architect Stanford White, and could accommodate 2,000 beds.  The 114-acre Los Angeles National Cemetery located just north of Wilshire Boulevard started as a small hill on land donated by rancho owner John Wolfskill.  By the end of the 19th century, the facility included a library, theater, dining hall, chapel, post office, laundry, and barracks.
