January 4, 1928 Francisco Venegas Guadalajara Jal. Dear brother: I had the pleasure of reading your letter dated the 25th of last month. I see by the date that you had not yet received my last letter. I believe this is due to a communication breakdown between Mazatlán and that city. I hope that by now you have the said letter in your possession, in which you will see that I finally decided to go into business and that God, as always, has helped me. Although I still need the help of someone that can be trusted; because Lola cannot since there is no place to keep the baby in sight [Eduardito is 1½ years old]. Also, here, it is very dangerous to leave them [the children] alone because of so much traffic and the gas [valve] knobs inside the house. It is precisely a week ago that we suffered a fright with Miguelito. He was crossing the street nearby when he was hit by a car. Even though it was not serious, it wasn't without consequences, for the car passed over him and dragged him a good stretch. It seems that perhaps he will come out of it with only slight bruises and contusions that have kept him in bed for a couple of days. He now gets around with a bit of a limp, somewhat like don Cuco. Lola did go through a terrible ordeal. Since I wasn't there when it all happened, she went out to see what was going on and there she found only his shoes and was told that her boy had been carried away dead and had been taken to the hospital. And so she returned with his shoes in hand and with her heart in pieces. We immediately telephoned to find out which hospital they had taken him to so we could go see him, when a man arrived with him very much alive. I also arrived at that very same time. It turns out he had taken him shopping without realizing what was happening [i.e. us not knowing whether he was still alive or dead as we had been told]. Now they are asking us to settle for the damages caused by the accident; we will let you know how much they give us for the blow. I hope all of you have continued in good health just as we have. I think that our hardships, in spite of everything, have not been as intense and prolonged as those suffered by our other brothers. I realize that no one is tested beyond what one can endure and it is true that if one looks for consolation it can be found within the same misfortune. But when I cannot resign myself I think about the situation over there with you it seems like... [section missing].. that cannot be because.. [section missing].. firm and not all of our neighbors are bad. I am pleased to know that Mother's illness has not been serious, neither have we had serious illnesses, and Lola is already recovering from poor health. You tell me Agustin's salary will improve for which I am glad; and you, how are you? How much do they pay you and are you happy in your work? And my dad, how's his chicken coop doing? How's the weather over there? Since the first of the year the weather here has changed and it has been warm. They say that it is that variable here."},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1. Subseries A.
