Von Stroheim was known for his meticulous attention to detail and authenticity when making a film.  Duplicating the entire central plaza of Monte Carlo, including the main facades of Monte Carlo's Hotel de France casino and the Cafe de Paris, cost Universal approximately $1,000,000, making it their most expensive venture to date.  The sets were built by Stroheim's assistant, Richard Day, on the backlot of Universal.
