After a lifetime of teaching and writing and giving helpful advice to popes as a Jesuit priest, he was made a Cardinal by Pope Clement VIII in 1599. He is depicted as a bishop, wearing a flattish green mitre, green cope, straight stole and lace collar. He holds a book open to the title page of perhaps his most famous four-volume doctrinal book about various controversies: in Latin, \"De Controversiis\" (\"On the Controversies\"). A star appears at either side of his head; below his feet, the Bellarmine family coat of arms with six pine cones. The shield of the University of Detroit incorporates the arms of the family of St. Ignatius, the bends or stripes of the maternal side are red and grey; the wolves and cauldron of the paternal side are crimson and silver. The inscription reads: University of Detroit; the foundation date is 1877. (The University of Detroit consolidated with Mercy College in 1990, and became the University of Detroit Mercy.)
