January 21, 1929 Mr. Francisco C. Venegas Guadalajara, Jal. Mex. Very esteemed and dear brother: I received your letter dated the 13th of the present month, to which I refer. I understand that you continued working with don Mateo and that they have increased your salary. In my previous letter, which you probably had not received when you wrote to me, I asked you to please collect the \"coins\" Anita has. And if so, I now ask you to give $50 pesos in silver to don Macedonio courtesy of his son Federico, resident of this city of Los Angeles, California; or rather tell Anita, if she still has the money, so she can arrange it. I am very glad the family is in good health, and thanks be to God that our family is also well. Last week Sigifredo, son of my compadre Trino Ruiz, was hit by an automobile, right in front of their home resulting in a broken leg and injuring other parts of his body, he is still in the hospital. I believe they do not want their relatives down there to know until the boy has recovered. I consider it an interesting case since his parents had just taken him out of the parish school, which my boys attend, to attend the public school saying that the former was too far and that there was greater danger because of the traffic. Furthermore that over there the nuns did not take good care of them, and they returned home all bruised. Also, that all the children attending said Catholic school were of the lower class for all of them are Mexicans, and that even English was not learned because they are allowed to speak their language; whereas in the government schools, they are not allowed to speak Spanish, and thus they quickly learn English because they are solely among Americans. Pray to God nothing will happen to my boys since it has been a year now that they daily have to cross a \"bulevard\" [Sunset Blvd] that is, a street that is about five leagues [about 17 miles] long and with constant traffic, in order to go to the Sister's school. We have a public school about two blocks from our home but I prefer ignorant sons to sons without God; and if I could [afford the tuition] I would pay to place the boys in a good private school where they would be even better off. Please give my mother a hug and another one to my father, and even if it tires you, also give one to each of my brothers and sisters. Whenever you see Vicente Álvarez give him my regards and the same to his family and also to the Dávila family. If someday you see don Ignacio Castellanos, and if it is not an inconvenience, give him my regards. As for me, I remember everyone but I don't know if it is advisable to mention my name."},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1. Subseries A.
