January 30, 1930 Mr. Francisco C. Venegas Escorza 684 Guadalajara, Jal. Méx. My dear brother: Your letters from the 10th and the 12th have been received and I now have the pleasure of referring to them. Regarding your first letter with respect to my affairs with the Mercantil Co. I can only tell you that I don't have many details and Lola can't help me either because she also no longer remembers, and furthermore it all took place under very difficult circumstances, therefore the only recourse left for now is the sale of the houses and the payment of everything thus solving this matter. But for that to happen a clear title to my former [houses] would have to be obtained and I don't know if the day when this can happen is nearby. What do you know about other properties in similar circumstances? Have some of them been returned [to their owners]? What do you know about the hometown [Zapotlanejo]? Is there now relative calm? What is being said about the new President, will there be some changes? Here, much is being said about this. How do you see business in Guadalajara, is there relative prosperity? From what I understand, you will not continue working there. Would it be better for you to do something on your own? I understand that you have bought a piece of land, and I think that is a very good move. Here it is also very easy to buy magnificent plots on good credit terms and near the beach such as in Santa Monica. Sidewalks, lighting, sewage, and concrete streets are already in place even before they start building here and there. Someday, if I am in the position to do so, I would also, upon returning, like to at least have a place where I can go to with my army of boys; so I ask you to start looking for at least some corner where I can buy a plot of land and build four walls because I would not like to become old bones here, much less be buried here. I understand what you say regarding a bus and its uses. You also tell me mom is doing much better from her recent illness. Regarding your letter dated the 10th, where you ask me if it would be a good idea to hand over those things to E. Hanon. I of course naturally wish to settle everything, however reflect upon what I am about to tell you and also ask dad for advice. It has been three years since my business was left paralyzed and it is well understood that during this time we have had this merchandise that, thanks to luck, happened to be outside of the store, we were able to keep them out of the hands of certain friends who took advantage of muddled waters....as you well know. Don't you think people would wonder why we waited all this time to do this, and may even believe that everything was premeditated and that surely we had more merchandise but did not pay immediately? Nevertheless, you figure it out, since it is very difficult for me to do so being so far away. Also think about how other creditors, on finding out that payments are still being made"},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1. Subseries A. All of this I tell you taking into account how it might affect all of you; as for me there is nothing to fear, since so much has happened and as of now there would be no way out of so many obligations, even if I wanted to. At any rate, if you go ahead and offer those things to E. Hanon it would be a good idea to set aside the typewriter for some other creditor who is in greater need. Tell me, if you have time, how the situation is coming along, one needs to know such things; so just pretend that I went to visit and that you are bringing me up to date. I don’t think it is inadvisable to do so now, and also tell me if you left your job and what do you intend to do next. A few days ago I received a letter from Jesús Ruiz but he didn't include his address, so I won't be able to write to him. Where could I write to him? How is Don Ignacio Castellanos, is he still the same as ever? Has his attitude towards us changed now? Does he have any kind of business there in Guadalajara?
