VINCENT'S COLLEGE, of which Los Angeles Col-lege is the successor, was founded in 1865, by the Fathers of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincen-tians). The first classes were taught in a building near the Plaza, then the heart of Los Angeles. After facing many discouragements, among them the death of the first president, Father Asmuth, the young institution, through the gen-erosity of the late O.W. Childs, was put in possession of a fine site at the southeast corner of Sixth and Hill Streets, to which it moved in March, 1868. The College received its charter from the State of California, August 15, 1869. It was thereby empowered to confer degrees, and was granted the privileges of a university. Under the administration of Very Rev. J. McGill, C.M., and Rev. M. Richardson, C.M., who succeeded him, the college more than kept pace with the growth of the city, until, in 1883, it was found necessary to erect an addition to the original building. But Los Angeles was then on the threshold of its remarkable career of expansion, so the need of a new site became imperative. The old buildings were soon overcrowded. Under the direction of the late Very Rev. A.J. Meyer, C.M., who succeeded to the presidency in 1884, and whose name is still a household word with old-time Californians, the college was removed, in 1887, to a new and commodious building on South Grand Avenue, where it continued to minister to the education re-quirements of the Catholic youth of this section. The lamented death of Father Meyer, in February, 1898, brought to the presidency the Very Rev. J.A. Lynn, C.M., who, in turn, was succeeded, in 1901, by Very Rev. Joseph S. Glass, C.M., D.D. In 1911, the determination of the Superiors of the Congregation of the Mission to withdraw from college work wherever possible, brought about the cessation of college work at St. Vincent's. Father Glass, however, with the best interests of our Catholic youth ever at heart, would not retire from the field of his zealous labors before assuring "},{"label":"Source","value":"Department of Archives & Special Collections, William H. He consequently approached the Jesuit Fathers and offered them the result of long years of devoted labor; and when this plan was found impossible, he gener-ously canvassed the city for the new college, which for lack of a more desirable location, was situated at Highland Park. Through the earnest and untiring efforts of Mr. P.J. McGarry a half block, 406x196 [sic] feet, was soon legally secured on Avenue 52 in Highland Park, about 4 1/2 miles from the centre of the city, and 7 miles from the centre of the residential district. Here a temporary one-story building, 90x41 [sic] feet, was immediately begun, the requirements of which seemed somewhat of a puzzle. It was to serve as school on week days, as church on Sundays; so constructed as to lend itself to instant transformation, and to take on, under its varied changes, the air of either church or school. The versatile mind of Albert C. Martin, a leading architect of the city, gave a happy solution to the difficulty, and the vigilant and energetic P.J. McDonald soon brought it to a realization, which wins the admiration of all who visit it. School opened on September 11th with 80 students, who attended Mass at No. 136 W. Avenue 57, and then proceeded to No. 215 W. Avenue 52, where school was to be conducted until the completion of the new building. On that morning, when the pupils, almost all from St. Vincent's, met their professors for the first time, it was cer-tainly on equal footing; for not even a solitary chair was to be found in the class rooms to lend solemnity to the occasion. Next morning, however, found matters considerably improved, for all were accommodated with chairs, and almost all with regular school desks. Class went quietly on in our cramped quarters ; the street and at times our neighbors' lawns affording an excuse, though a poor one, for a play-ground, while we anxiously awaited the removal of our last tenant and the conversion of the encumbered lots into a yard for our games. Within a few days numbers in First High increased to 40, and it was found necessary to remove them to the parlor of our residence. The telephones were adapted to our conditions, and, during class hours were allowed to rest; the lawn outside affording ample room for the reception of visitors. The spirit and training of the Vincentian Fathers was everywhere apparent in our boys during these trying days; the fervor of their de-votion during Mass was a source of consolation to all, and their gentle- "},{"label":"Source","value":"Department of Archives & Special Collections, William H. On September 29th class was held for the last time at No. 215, and on October 2nd, the Holy Angels led us into our large new class rooms, to the great relief and consolation of both pupils and teachers. Just as things were ready for the move the sky put on a menacing appearance, and the September rains threatened us. Our lightning constructor came to the rescue and within five days there appeared ready for use a handsome, airy gymnasium 45x35 [sic] feet, containing two indoor handball courts, and providing desirable protection during the rainy season. At the same time a double handball court was in course of construction in the yard, while the boys were busy preparing for indoor baseball and basket ball. Later on two double tennis courts were laid, and thus bodily exercise, so necessary to youth during the years of study, was amply provided for. Looking back over the year now drawing to a close--our first year in Los Angeles--we desire to express our heartfelt thanks to the boys for their loyal spirit and conduct. A few months ago it was announced in our columns that the Vin-centian Fathers, after nearly half a century of whole-hearted devoted-ness to the cause of the Christian education of our boys and young men, a devotedness which has been blessed by God to the incalculable benefit of so many in our Southland, have been called by their Superior to the more especial [sic] work of their Order, the giving of Missions and the direction of Seminaries. Before retiring from the field where they had toiled with so much ardor and success they made sure of successors in this most important work. Our Beloved Bishop invited the Jesuit Fathers to take up in his diocese this education of young men, which the whole community saw, with much sorrow and regret, relinquished by the Vincentian Fathers. At length, a start is to be made. The Jesuit Fathers had hoped at one time to staff the entire college, but this was found impossible. They will be ready in September to open a full high school along the traditional lines of the Ratio Studiorum, or Method of Studies, in vogue in the Jesuit colleges for the past three hundred years. While the accommodations will not be of the best temporarily, the work on the new building will begin as soon as possible, and be pushed rapidly to completion. The new college now opening takes honorable pride in being the successor of St. Vincent's College, which has de-servedly won its way into the esteem and love of its illustrious alumni and of the whole community. The Fathers of the Society of Jesus would have the alumni of St. Vincent's consider the new college as their own and will themselves regard it an honor to have each and all of them at the head of the roll of the future alumni of the college. The sons of St. Ignatius will gratefully receive them as their most glorious heritage from the sons of St. Vincent. On them, in a very special manner, must they depend for the success of the great undertaking to which they have been invited by our devoted Bishop, whose heart is fully taken up with zeal for the solid education of the young. Those who desire to make either a scientific or historical study of that system have abundant source of informa-tion in \"\"Loyola\"\" of the Great Educational Series, pub-lished by Scribner, and \"\"Jesuit Education,\"\" published by Herder. The subjoined brief outline of the underlying principles of the sys-tem, the dominant features of its method, and the object aimed at by its teaching, will give a general idea of its purpose. Education, in its complete sense, is understood by us as the full and harmonious development of the intellectual, moral and physical powers of man. It is not, therefore, mere instruction or the acquisition of knowledge, although instruction and the acquisition of knowledge neces-sarily accompany any right system of education. But the gaining of knowledge is a secondary, or at any rate, a concomitant, result of educa-tion. Learning is an instrument of education, not its end. The end is culture, and mental and moral development. Hence, such instruments of education, that is, such studies, sciences or languages, are chosen as will effectively further the end proposed. These studies are selected, moreover, only in such numbers as are sufficient and helpful to ensure a gradual and natural development of the students' powers. A student who is to be educated will not be forced, in the short period of his college course, and with his immature faculties, to study a multiplicty of the languages and sciences into which the vast world of modern knowledge has been divided. If two or more sciences, for instance, give similar training to some mental faculty, that one is chosen which combines the most effective training, with the largest and most fundamental knowledge. The purpose of the mental training given is not proximately to fit the student for some special employment or profession, but to give him such a general, vigorous and rounded development as will enable him to cope successfully even with the unforeseen emergencies of life. The studies, therefore, are so graded and classified as to be adapted to the mental growth of the student and the scientific unfolding of knowledge; they are so chosen and communicated that the student shall gradually and harmoniously reach, as nearly as may be, that measure of culture of which he is capable. It is fundamental in the system of the Society of Jesus that different studies have distinct and peculiar educational values. Mathematics, the Natural Sciences, Language and History are complementary in-struments of education to which the doctrine of equivalence cannot be applied. The specific training given by one cannot be supplied by another. Furthermore, Language and History have always been held in esteem as leading factors in education. Mathematics and the Natural Sciences bring the student into contact with the material aspects of nature, and exercise the inductive and deductive powers of reasoning. Language and History effect a higher union; they are manifestations of spirit to spirit, and by their study and for their acquirement the whole mind of man is brought into widest and subtlest play. The acquisition of Lan-guage especially calls for delicacy of judgment and fineness of percep-tion, and for a constant, keen and quick use of the reasoning powers. A special importance is attached to the classic tongues of Rome and Greece. As these are languages with a structure and idiom remote from the language of the student, the study of them lays bare before him the laws of thought and logic, and requires attention, reflection, and analysis of the fundamental relations between thought and grammar. In studying them the student is led to the fundamental recesses of lan-guage. They exercise him in exactness of conception in grasping the foreign thought, and in delicacy of expression in clothing that thought in the dissimilar garb of the mother-tongue. While recognizing, then, in education the necessity and importance of Mathematics and the Natural Sciences, which unfold the inter-dependence and laws of the world of time and space, the Jesuit system of education has unwaver-ingly kept Language in a position of honor as an instrument of culture. Lastly, the system does not share the illusion of those who seem to imagine that education, understood as an enriching and stimulating "},{"label":"Source","value":"Department of Archives & Special Collections, William H. While conceding the effects of education in energizing and re-fining imagination, taste, understanding, and powers of observation, we have always held that knowledge and intellectual development of them-selves have no moral efficacy. Only religion can purify the heart, and guide and strengthen the will. The Jesuit system of education, then, aims at developing, side by side, the moral and intellectual faculties of the student, and sending forth to the world men of sound judgment, of acute and rounded intellect, of upright and manly conscience. And since men are not made better citizens by the mere accumulation of knowledge, without a guiding and controlling force, the principal faculties to be developed are the moral faculties. Moreover, morality is to be taught continuously; it must be the vital force animating the whole organic structure of education. It must be the atmosphere the student breathes; it must suffuse with its light all that he reads, illuminate all that is noble, expose what is base, and give to the true and the false their relative light and shade. In a word, the purpose of Jesuit teaching is to lay a solid substructure in the whole mind and character for any superstructure of science, pro-fessional and special; as well as for the upbuilding of moral, civil and religious life. The College was opened on September 11, 1911, with four years of High School, and will begin the college classes as soon as a sufficient number of students enter for those classes. Day scholars only are admitted. The College authorities are convinced that without religion there can be no education in the true sense of the word, that is to say, no com-plete and harmonious development of the intellect and heart of man. They hold, furthermore, that religious truth, being definite and certain, may be taught with as much exactness as language or any other branch. Hence, the study of Christian Doctrine is required daily, and lectures on it are given once a week. Students of any denomination are admitted, and all are required to show a respectful demeanor during the ordinary exercises of public prayer. Catholic students are required to be present at daily Mass, to approach the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist every month, and if they have not received the Sacraments of Penance, Con-firmation or Holy Eucharist, to prepare for their reception. The exercises of the Retreat, affecting man as man in his relations to his Creator, to his parents, to his fellow-man, and to himself, are obligatory for all. The last two exercises, however, pertaining to the practice of specific religion are not of obligation for non-Catholic students. The efforts of the teachers and prefects will be much facilitated if the co-operation of the parents can be secured. Parents are, therefore, earnestly requested: 1st. Students are expected to be present at 8:30 for Mass. Class hours are from 9:00 to 11:30, and from 12:30 to 3:00. Saturday is the weekly holiday. Other holidays are: All holy days of obligation, the national holidays, Christmas and Easter vacations. If success is to be attained nothing but strict necessity should inter-fere with a boy's presence every day and the whole day. It is, there-fore, highly important that all students be present on the day of re-opening, as the regular class work begins at once. Nor is it less so that students remain to the close of school, as there is no promotion at the year-end without examinations. Late-comers and those leaving before the close of the scholastic year, cannot compete for class honors, neither can those who return late after the Christmas or Easter vaca-tions. The casual absentee not only loses the instruction given in class dur-ing the hours of his absence, but has his mind distracted with plans and projects not conducive to his studies, and is fostering a habit which, in later life, may completely ruin his career in business. As the institution is not endowed, it is entirely dependent for its support on the fees paid for tuition. High School Course per month, payable in advance, $5.00. The founder of a permanent scholarship has a right in perpetuity to keep one of these boys at the College till he has completed his studies. The session is divided into two terms, the first ending on or about the 1st of February and the second towards the end of June. It is highly important that all students be present on the day of reopening, as the regular class-work begins at once. Not only the students themselves suffer greatly by missing the introductory lessons of their respective classes, but, in consequence thereof, the teachers also are caused great annoyance. It is therefore expected that all present them-selves on the day of reopening. Late comers and those who do not take all the branches cannot compete for honors in their respective classes. Admission Candidates for admission who are not personally acquainted with some member of the Faculty must pre-sent testimonials of a good moral character. If they come from an-other institution, they must bring satisfactory certificates of their good standing in the institution from which they come. Accurate information about their previous studies is tested by an examination. Students who wish to enter an advanced class must pass an examina-tion in the branches previously studied by that class. No one is admitted unless he is willing and fit to study all the obligatory branches of his class. New students should be announced before August 1st. Promotions and Examinations The progress of each student and his standing in class are determined by thorough examinations, which are held at the close of each term, as also by compe-titions which are given weekly in one or other of the branches. The annual promotions are decided by averaging the com-petition marks of the entire year with those obtained in the examinations. Seventy per cent in each of the principal branches is required. Prizes Prizes and honors are awarded at the Closing Exer-cises and published in the annual catalogue. There are two classes of prizes given yearly--medals and book premiums. Medals are given for Conduct and Application, Elocution, Christian Doctrine, and general excellence in class work. The medals for conduct and application are determined by the combined votes of the faculty and students; for proficiency or general excellence, by the class marks and competitions of the entire year com-bined with those of the written examinations. Only those students whose names appear on the Roll of Honor are eligible for the conduct and application medals. The medal for Elocution will not be awarded more than once to the same student in the same Division. The following are the four points from which the class medals are determined: 1. For the first term the average application mark in class, combined with the percentage obtained in the weekly competitions. 2. The average percentage obtained in the written examinations held about February 1st. 3. The application mark and percentage of competition attained in the second term. 4. The percentage of the written examinations in June. Each point counts one-quarter. The course of studies adopted in the Collegiate Department is directed to strengthen and to broaden the foundation for professional studies which has been laid in the High School Department. The Collegiate course is the one known as the college course of liberal arts, which, including a course of mental philosophy, leads to the degree of Bachelor of Arts. It was found impossible to open full college courses for the first year, but these courses will be started as soon as a sufficient number of eligible students present themselves. The instruction given in the High School Department of the Los Angeles College, besides being a preparation for college, aims at impart-ing an education such as is usually given in the best High Schools and Academies. It comprises foru classes, corresponding to the four years classical course of approved High Schools. As it is one of the main ends of education to develop in the youthful mind the habit of clear and accurate thinking, much attention is given, the first year or two, to the analysis and synthesis of sentences, and in general, to the study of grammatical rules and principles. This is all the more insisted upon because a thorough knowledge of Etymology and Syntax is the only sound basis for the more advanced work of reading and literary interpretation. For the same reasons, authors are studied with much care and minuteness, with a view to thoroughness rather than to extensive reading in the Latin and Greek authors. A little well thought out is more effective towards true education than a great deal that is ill-digested and imperfectly understood. Much more stress is laid on the subject of Latin composition than is usual in High Schools, for the reason that the value of the study of Latin, as an educational instrument, rests in no small measure on the work of composition. There is scarcely an intellectual process which the young student has to go through that requires more reflection and alertness of mind, a more concentrated attention and a clearer insight into the precise meaning of language than the task of \"\"reproducing in an ancient tongue the thoughts and sentences of modern speech.\"\" If Latin deserves to be retained as an instrument of training, Latin com-position deserves to be studied well. In Mathematics and other studies, the programme here set down fol-lows the usual division of subjects in approved High School courses. The course in English is particularly thorough and complete. Gradual and harmonious development on a systematic basis has ever been the aim in the selection and gradation of all these studies. First Year High In this class the study of Latin is begun, the object of the class being to familiarize the student with Latin Etymology. Accurate memory work and daily drill, both oral and written, are employed to secure familiarity with the Latin forms. Habits of close observation, of preserving study and of logical method are inculcated. Thus the student becomes conscious of the progress made and acquires confidence in himself. A review of English grammar runs parallel with the study of Latin. This affords an opportunity for illustration and comparison and renders the special English work of the year intelligible and inter-esting. Efforts are made to develop imagination and the literary sense by the methodic study and imitation of selections from Irving. A book-let has been specially prepared for this purpose. The prescribed studies of this year are: Christian Doctrine The Baltimore catechism reviewed with simple explanations. Latin PRECEPTS: (Both Terms). Though at present our books are few in number, they are care-fully selected with a view to the needs of the college students, and will, through the generosity of many friends, soon reach a goodly number. Director--John C. McAstocker, S.J. Albert Whelan, S.J., Director. James T. Burroughs, Organist. We look forward next year, to the founding of Sodalities of the Blessed Virgin Mary, for the greater increase of fervor among the stu-dents, and of Debating Societies for literary improvement. Los Angeles College Athletic Association (L. A. C. A.) This Association consists of a Board of Student Officers, a member of the Faculty who acts as Moderator, and those of the students who desire to be members. The purpose of the Association is to provide suitable and enjoyable means of exercise for the students. A rigorous supervision is exercised on the part of the Faculty Moderator, and only those students are eligible for active membership who stand well in mat-ters of study and discipline. Thus athletics, far from being a hindrance to academic progress, fulfill their proper function in affording the needed relaxation, and make for a moral as well as a physical up-building of the student. Its maintenance depends on the tuition fees of the students, and on such donations as the generosity of its benefactors may prompt them to offer. Its professors serve without salary or any compensation beyond the necessary living expenses, and we therefore appeal with the more confidence to those who have the interests of Catholic Education at heart. Our special needs are: 1st. The founding of free scholarships for deserving students. 2nd. Means to eliminate gradually our indebtedness. 3rd. Funds to equip a Physical and Chemical Laboratory. 4th. Donations for the Students' Library. "},{"label":"Source","value":"Department of Archives & Special Collections, William H.
