He attended Los Angeles City College before transferring to the University of Southern California where he graduated with a masters degree in pharmacology. He owned a pharmacy called Bixel Pharmacy, located on the corner of 6th Street and Bixel Street, near Good Samaritan Hospital in downtown Los Angeles. \n\nThe Ayala family first lived on Naud Street.
