He was the first African American mayor of Los Angeles, and only the second African American mayor of a major U.S. city. Gladys Burns was the wife of Fritz Burns, a major real estate developer in Southern California and a regent of Loyola University (now Loyola Marymount University) for many years. Gladys was active in a number of charitable organizations and was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal by Pope John XXIII in 1960. Timothy Manning served as the archbishop of Los Angeles from 1910 to 1985, becoming cardinal in 1973. The cardinal was a strong supporter of the 1973 merger between Loyola University and Marymount College to form Loyola Marymount University. Mary Dockweiler Sooy was the daughter of Isidore Dockweiler and Gertrude Reeve Dockweiler. She was a prominent Los Angeles socialite, also very active in such charitable causes as the Los Angeles Orphanage Guild. She married twice, first to lawyer William Kenyon Young, son of the prominent California Democrat Milton K. Young, and after the former's death, she married Dr. Daniel Sooy. John Ferraro served in the Los Angeles City Council from 1966 until his death in 2001, making him the longest-running city council member in Los Angeles history. The St. Vincent Medical Center was established in 1856 by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul as the first hospital in Los Angeles. During the 1970s, it was also the site of a nurses' training program administered by Loyola Marymount University."},{"label":"Description","value":"Black and white photograph taken at a charity event sponsored by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, held at City Hall in Los Angeles.
