February 17, 1931 Mr. Juan Venegas Guadalajara, Jal. México Dear Dad: Today I received your letter dated the 10th of the present month. It pleases me to know that my mom and all of you have been well, thanks be to God. Generally speaking we are well, because as you must know that where there is a large family, there's always someone who will complain. I was in bed for two days; I believe it was bile caused by a fellow from whom I have not been able to collect $60 dollars from checks that he gave me without having any money in the bank and I received others from some clients almost two months ago. I am happy to know the boys have been doing better on their jobs, surely Nacho also already earns something. I am very much in agreement with your decision for now of not getting into that business because besides the pressure of moving someone else's merchandise, paying taxes in the thousands and being that we are in bad economic times, there is also the problem, as you pointed out, that there will always be some who believe that you are actually managing a business of mine. Also for you it would be very frustrating, as before, with many commitments which is the worst thing one can now do: get into debt, because then you neither eat or sleep in peace. What you ought to do is save what you can in cash and not invest in trinkets because when you need the money there is no one who will buy. And the lot, did you sell it already? Here it’s getting worse day by day, and the people are scared because there is an army of detectives searching to deport Mexicans who may have entered illegally which causes many to stay at home rather than go out in search of work; they do not understand that it is only those who do not have a passport that will be deported. Since I received your letter I have been thinking where we could go. I have to give very special consideration to the climate, because if here I have been well it is because it doesn't get very hot, even when it does it's only for two or three hours during the summer days and then it cools down with the breeze from the nearby ocean. I am already collecting information about everything and I also want to go to the Consulate to get information about some regions that lately have been irrigated like the one of el \"Monte\" according to the note attached, one has to take into account that we can no longer have so many people living without producing what one consumes and so agriculture will become the safest bet when other things fail. And there are lands that do give a one hundred percent return. Here in Baja California there are lands that the [Mexican] Government wanting to colonize and they are very good except that they are difficult to till."},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1.
