He was noted for being particularly sensitive to the needs of non-English speaking Catholics in the archdiocese, and he created 50 Hispanic parishes and missions. Mary J. Workman was reared in the Roman Catholic faith, receiving a Catholic education at the Convent of the Sacred Heart of Mary and Jesus, in Oakland, from which she graduated in 1890. She led the establishment of the Brownson House (1901), a landmark of the settlement house philosophy on the West Coast. She also participated in the Catholic Association for International Peace (CAIP), Southern California Committee, of which she was secretary.
