April 10, 1931  Mr. Juan Venegas  Escorza 684 Guad. Jal. Mexico  Dear Dad:  Without having the pleasure of having recently received a letter from you, I write to  communicate some news. It seems that God is testing us because it has been awhile now that we  have been with more than our share of sicknesses or some other misfortunes in addition to the  slow business (I believe that we do not now make enough to cover expenses); we have had  Guillermo sick in bed for a week now and I also have been sick the past four days including  today because just now got up without being able to attend the store. Lola has had to do whatever  she could over there alone.  I believe you probably have received my last letter and a newspaper that I sent you in which  among other things I referred to the matter of Baja California. Well, nothing more has been said  about it and no one has come by representing the [Mexican] Government as had been said; it  now turns out that the project is a private one and not official. I believe that only seeing it with  our own eyes will one have a complete picture. I don't know agriculture and neither can I now  make changes. But if we are seriously thinking about it perhaps it would not be beyond you to  meet me in Tijuana where I would wait for you and then from there both of us go to see that  (project) over there. Also perhaps before you return you could come and stay here a few days  with us, because as a visitor it is easy to enter this country.  As for Soledad, I have not received any letter lately perhaps it is because of Lent.  I hope you are in perfectly good health and that my mom has now recuperated from her illness.  Guillo [Guillermo] has suffered very strong attacks of asthma and coughing which keeps him in  bed.  With nothing more for now your son who asks for your blessing.  M.
