Bishop was named for Samuel Bishop who built two small cabins on the creek in August of 1881. Bishop stayed in the valley for only one year as he had trouble with the local Indians. The first structure in present Bishop was a building moved here from Owensville in late 1864 and used as a blacksmith shop. The first church on the eastern Sierras was one started by Rev.
