His frail constitution prevented him from being accepted as a Jesuit priest, but he offered himself to the Order as a helper or lay brother. He was accepted and joined the ministry to the North American Indians, where he suffered martyrdom by tomahawk. The saint is depicted here in the clothing of a lay volunteer. He stands on crossed Indian tomahawks from the handles of which hang rawhide thongs. Fir trees, one by a snow bank, the other by a running brook, represent the locations of his service in the North American countryside. The first quarter of the Rockhurst shield bears the green and gold stripes of Oñaz, borrowed from the maternal side of Saint Ignatius’s family. The second quarter displays the moorcocks from the coat of arms of Saint Thomas More to whom the college was dedicated. In the third quarter is a holly tree from the arms of the Dowling family, because Father Michael Dowling, S.J., was its founder and first President. The fourth quarter is made of a large rock and a group of trees or hurst. The quartering cross with seven pillars represents the seven pillars of wisdom as well as the seven liberal arts. The inscription reads: Rockhurst College, Kansas City, Mo. The date of foundation is 1910.
