Though his father was Governor of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, John preferred to devote his life to labor in the missions of India as a member of the Society of Jesus. He is attired as an ascetic, with access to all members of the caste system. During his many years of successful ministry, he angered the royalty of Madura by ministering to those of the lowest caste. He was finally apprehended, imprisoned and tortured. Finally, he was beheaded with a scimitar. He is depicted with a gold flame at each side of his head, perhaps representing two miracles attributed to him during his lifetime. The orange-red heart at the right knee and a black yin and yang symbol at the right ankle indicate his love for all in India. He stands on greenery under which a black scroll is weighted down by a scimitar. The shield of the Society of Jesus consists of a blue circlet on a purple background on which the Jesuit logo of IHS in gold is written above the three nails surrounded by rays of light. The surround reads: the Society of Jesus, “A.M.D.G.” (the Jesuit motto abbreviated).
