November 20, 1929 Mr. Juan Venegas Guadalajara, Jal. My Dear Dad: I received your letter dated the 9th of the present month which I have the pleasure of answering with the present one. Knowing that you have not suffered disagreeable events such as illnesses, or even worse, the seven plagues of Egypt that devastated that unfortunate country, I cannot but be happy and thank God. We agree that for now we cannot expect justice for those who do not belong to the family [the ruling political party], and I know that if we ask for it the opposite will be done and if we implore mercy we will be answered with a mocking laughter. This explains why so many compatriots do not even think of returning, these being among the best, because in this country there cannot be any sánganos [loafers] like over there. Here whoever does not work does not eat, and on the other hand all invalids and disabled have their sustenance assured by charitable institutions. For example: there's a lady with children who became a widow, well she is given everything she needs no matter what her nationality. You inquire about the education of the children. I have tried to do what I can and we are very satisfied with the education given by the venerable religious women [Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange] who with so much zeal and charity dedicate themselves to instill in each child a true Christian character. It is sad to see how some people who call themselves Catholic prefer to send their children to public schools being able to send them to a Catholic one equally without cost. The Sisters are so good that during these days when Lola was a bit sick they came to visit us. As to the \"carcancha\" [jalopy], Lola and the boys don't want me to sell it because we use it to go to Mass on Sundays and in the afternoon we go for a ride. And at the same time it is also of use for delivering orders to persons who live far away. When the oldest brother behaves correctly and his way of life is irreproachable, then it is convenient to set him up as an example to the rest, unfortunately the first one just because he is the first one to come into this world is not exempt from all faults, and has to struggle against the three enemies equally as the rest. Nevertheless: not for being the oldest, but beyond this, for being like everyone else, one has a soul to save and this is true whether one lives in the same piece of land that saw one be born or in exile, since it accompanies us wherever. I hope to God to remain faithful until death."},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1. Subseries A.
