December 22, 1931 Mr. Juan Venegas Guadalajara, Jal. Esteemed Compadre: I answer your letter dated the 23rd of October which I hadn’t the time to do until now, and I do so with great pleasure. I hope all of you are in good health, we are fine thanks be to God. Compadre, don't worry, for we both suffer from the same illness, it's been days now that my back hurts and my head hurts that not even when I go to bed do I rest, what you should do is rest a lot and not work so much, if you find a remedy for that, send me the recipe. It gives me great pleasure to know your business is doing well, because there is no greater satisfaction than to work for oneself, from what you tell me your sales are very good, the day we were to sell that much we would feel so good. When we took over this [store] we used to sell 25.00 pesos [dollars] daily, afterwards the sales went down to about 20 and now there are days that we only sell 10 or 15 pesos and most of it on credit because this is the system here, however we have very good clients. Commerce is so different here, it is not so difficult and it is not boring, everything is packaged and each with its price. Miguel estimates that we earn 20 to 25 percent profit, that is why with the little that is sold one has enough to live comfortably and the greatest advantage is that here they are not bothering us like they do over there, and more so when one has to pay the government more than what one earns. Here we pay each year for the store license and that is very little. It would give us great pleasure if we could talk over the telephone although we do not have one, but we have a friend and client who does and has offered it if someday we wanted to, although they say it costs a lot it would be good to find out in order to know how much it cost per minute. It gave me great pleasure to hear that Chayo became a nun. I envy you; few parents have that happiness of seeing their children in such a beautiful vocation. My, but you are a joker. You had us believing that Pancho also was joining the religious life; we were not surprised about Chayo, but we were making a sign of the cross knowing that Pancho had found his other half. I, for one, was sorry for the young girl [Lupe], you cannot imagine how much we laughed when we found out it wasn't true, we continue to remember once in a while. We received the photo of my comadre and in spite of her illnesses she appears to be the same as when we left her. Chayo is so very fat and Lupita has grown so much, the boys were very happy when they saw the photo and they began to remember when they were over there and used to play with them."},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1. Tell me if Chayo is still there or if she has already left for here [on her way to San Francisco]. Last night I dreamt that I went over there and that I had brought back my comadre with me. What do you think, will this dream come true? We received a letter from Chole in which she sends you her greetings and she tells us how happy she is that Chayo is going to join them. I send you photos of the boys, taken at school. I don't remember if I told you that Guillo now wears glasses, his eyes are very weak, and he had trouble focusing, but he is much better now. It takes me forever to write, since I don't know how. I have many things to tell you but at the last minute I forget what it is. When you see Cuca and Lucita please give them my regards. Receive my greetings and also from Miguel and each of the boys and the girl. Your comadre who appreciates you.
