The first documented discovery of gold in California occurred in 1842 when Francisco Lopez found gold deposits in Placerita Canyon, six years before the start of the California Gold Rush.  Between 1872 and 1875, businessman Henry Mayo Newhall purchased ranchos in central and southern California, including the Rancho San Francisco.  Anticipating the success of the railroads, Newhall granted a right of way through his lands in the Santa Clarita Valley to the Southern Pacific Railway, thereby enabling the first tracks connecting Los Angeles and San Francisco.  He also sold them a parcel of land along the tracks for a whistle-stop.  He named the station Saugus, after his hometown in Massachusets.  The railroad company began designing a new town around the station, and named it Newhall.  Newhall existed as an independent but unincorporated town until 1987, when Newhall, Valencia, Canyon Country, and Saugus consolidated to form the City of Santa Clarita."},{"label":"Language","value":"eng"},{"label":"Publisher","value":"Los Angeles, Cal.: M.
