October 21, 1930 Mr. Juan Venegas Guadalajara, Jal. México My Dear Dad: I have in front of me your letter written the 21st of last month which I have the pleasure of answering today. As you can see, it is a bit late, but since I wrote to Francisco, I was under the impression that I had already answered you. In spite of the fact that I don't have any interests over there, I nevertheless continue to receive many letters that you may well imagine originate from all of those persons with whom I had business dealings and who do not forget about me. On my part I answer most politely and I give them the expected hope. Also family correspondence is numerous, beyond that which I sustain with you, also with Soledad, some from Mexico \"City\" and others from Zapotlanejo and several from the that same city [Guadalajara]. By the last letter I received from Francisco I find out that my mother is well again as well as the rest of you thanks be to God; and I hope that when you read this letter you will not suffer from chahuistes [sickness come upon them]. You ask how everyone is over here. Everyone is fine, thanks be to God. As long as no one is sick then everyone is super fine. That business of \"throwing dirt in the midst\" and \"eyes that do not see.....\" is what has made it possible for this bread of exile not to be as bitter as it could be for someone from over there who arrives leaving behind a pleasant life, but not so for us who were treated like vicious dogs. In your letter you tell me that I should not be preoccupied with my level of debt over there; it is true that in a certain necessary way I have not been preoccupied and much less now living over here. But one sees that it's not enough to do good things that may appear bad, and of this there is much over there especially in our home town. I have been able to find out about rumors started by our enemies and it frightens me even more when appearances support them: for example that I had it all planned, that I hid a lot of money about some $20,000 twenty thousand pesos and that I stole all the merchandise and that now I bought the lot over here where I live and more so now that I have bought a big car in which I take out all the little boys to romp, and it all comes down to this: that God has helped me for He is with everyone and everywhere. Of course if I could return, I believe I would never go to my \"nice\" hometown, unless time allows a heavy veil of forgetfulness to fall and then only when no one remembers us either for good or for bad."},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1. And God free me from those persons that for one reason or another accuse one of having been the cause of losing part of one's possessions or simply of tranquility, sleep, and appetite. Regarding the embargo that one of the commercial houses in Guadalajara made upon the building that belonged to Antonio, one of them in a letter “me pone de oro 90 y azul” and asks that if I cannot go there soon, to name someone to represent me in order to settle accounts and \"compensate\" him for his work, in other words now that they are on the \"candlelabra\" they would make crumbs of me if I would go there and put myself at their mercy. I would like to tell those people that are after the parcels of land that they settle things with you who are my representative, but I don't know if you would think it a good thing to do. I from afar don't know how to deal with the situation but you could very easily do so. In fact they mention land clearings on the hill and many other things that I am not aware of and I even fear that they will get into it all without my authorization. I would like to know who was elected Governor because I have a friend here who is a nephew of one of the Deputies and of a General. This Deputy would be elected into office along with the Governor should he win. If so, this one has an offer to go back and land on his feet and with a promising future. Furthermore since those deputies are from the area of Tepatitlán as well as my friend, a Cristero companion of mine, who offers me his full support and influence in the future to change the entire political landscape of those areas; if only so much beauty would come true. Lola says that she would feel sad having to stand in as the “mother” of some family member but that as a godmother she is entirely at your service. It is a disgrace, that now, when business is so bad, that so many government bandits come to take, even what one has not earned, just to end up greasing all those dirty hands through which taxes flow, and which in the final analysis is wasted because they do not even provide public service, leaving each to scratch with his own fingernails. And this is not meant to put down our country, to which I would like to return, but this is the reality and the truth, it must be said even if it burns one's mouth. I don't know what advice to give you, there are so many things to consider, one thing for sure, to this country of the dollar one must bring dollars to be able to do something except look for work, because working here is a barbarity; they will even take your last drop of blood and this if you are lucky enough to find work. I don't say that there aren’t some, who find favorable positions, but those of us who came without knowing a single word of this language remain reduced to the category of a day laborer from over there, and this is difficult.
