March 19, 1928 Mr. Francisco C. Venegas Guadalajara, Jal. Mex. Esteemed brother: I received your letter written on the 4th of this month. I regret that you have been ill and I hope that by now it is over and that everyone is well. It is understood that the sewing machine has been handed over. One can tell that \"El Prieto\" is not as retarded in his grammar for he hardly threw \"stones.\" I started this letter a week ago after we returned from San Diego, where we saw Chole who sends you her love. She is doing well and they will soon move to San Francisco, Calif. The nuns send their regards to mom and dad. Bartola Nuño is also there and also sends her regards. I received your letter two days ago written on the 18th of the month but as much as I want to I cannot do any writing while managing the store due to distractions, and since from the moment I get up, and open the store, I don't return until 8:00 or 8:30 PM, and by then I am very tired and sleepy, which is why so much time passes by without my answering [letters]. And that is also why I cannot give more attention to my business matters in Mexico, it is hard for me to get an idea of the present situation and therefore I hesitate to make decisions since none of the interested parties communicate with me even though I have tried to do so. I wrote to Favier proposing he enter into an arrangement with Lebre to collect the merchandise from the latter paying the bill to the former, but I have not received a single letter from Favier and I do not know what he has done. If you ever have an opportunity, please speak to Favier about the matter at hand and see what he thinks; I know he confiscated the goods that Ignacio had in his possession. I am very glad you are well and that your job is coming along fine. It is my opinion that the business with don Manuel is better off left alone, since I understand it is terminated and I don't know if he is in possession of the foreclosed properties. I don't know who owns the goods that are with Ignacio. I would like to know because E. Solórzano tells me that don Ignacio told him that they were confiscated by Favier and you haven’t told me anything about this. Tell me if it is acceptable to offer the Oliver machine [typewriter] to one of the creditors, for example to Beick Fels and Co. to whom I owe about $200 pesos. The boys are fine and have grown, they remember all of you often, their papá Juan and mamá Julia, and they want to go play over there. Eduardo no longer causes trouble and he sleeps with his brothers in the other room alone."},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1. Subseries A. We Left L.A. about 7:00 A.M., traveling through a series of towns that line up [along] the coast going south, with several large cities that are about four leagues [~14 miles] from each other, but are linked by resplendent cement roads, and on either side one could see endless orange orchards, some trees in bloom and others with fruit. After driving about thirty leagues [~104 miles], one comes upon the sea and then one travels along the edge of the water on an asphalt road while receiving the breeze under a splendid sun. From town to town one can still admire the very old \"Misiones\" of the Franciscan fathers who founded them; now they are preserved as historical monuments. Finally one arrives to San Diego at about noon. This Port [San Diego] is one of the most important, where cruisers and submarines of the American fleet are found. That day, after visiting Chole for some time, we left in the afternoon for Tijuana, Mexico, which is a half hour from San Diego. We arrived at the border line and were allowed to step into the Mexican territory of Baja California. The next day, Sunday, we went to Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe. After breakfast we started our return and at about noon we stopped at a beach for a while to let the boys gather shells on the sand; they took off their shoes and went into the little waves that came up to their ankles and it was a delight to see Eduardito running and running with delight each time he saw a wave that seemed might cover them all. Finally God granted us a very happy trip and we returned about 7:00 P.M. on Sunday the 17th of this month. Lola seems to be adjusting and she has even gained weight, the only thing is, without maids here, she has a lot of work to do, and has no time to write, but she doesn't ever forget all of you; and even though we have many conveniences in this country, we always long to be with you, and only because of the circumstances do we remain outside of our beloved Mexico. I recently received the bad news about the boss [Miguel Gomez Losa] of that boy [Alfonso], that a bunch of rubble fell upon the boss and other workers who were working on the project of the \"Maestro,\" is it true?
