Mrs Rathbone Snr was the widow of William Rathbone IV (1757 - 1809) and the mother of Audubon's host Richard Rathbone. During his stay with the family Audubon had struck up a particular friendship with Mrs Rathbone Snr, nicknaming her 'Queen Bee'.\n\nThe painting it inscribed 'To Mrs Wm Rathbone' and dated 1826. It has a poem composed by the artist:\n\n\"Kind Lady, may a timid guest,\nWithin thy happy dwelling rest,\nFor me alone the barren field\nCan now but scanty gleanings yield.\nThe boor has hous'd his golden sheaves\nAnd Autumn tints the fading leaves,\nAnd soon the wintry gales will blow,\nAnd shivering trees be clad in snow,\nThen let me not in vain aspire\nTo perch in safety by the fire.\nI'll strive they bounty to repay,\nAnd hail with song thy natal day.\nStill may that day, through many a year, \nStill bright on all thine heart holds dear,\nStill add fresh blessings to the past\nAnd find thee happier than the last.\nAccept my strain - though ???? I sing,\nThough sober colours deck my wind,\nMy strains sincere, though void of art,\nMy wing protects a grateful heart.\" "},{"label":"Repository","value":["Victoria Gallery and Museum"]},{"label":"Copyright Holder","value":"Out of Copyright"},{"label":"Medium","value":"Pencil, pen, ink, watercolour, bodycolour with gum arabic on paper"},{"label":"Measurements","value":"H33.5cm x W28cm"},{"label":"More Information","value":"Scroll down for full metadata"}],"description":"A robin","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/d68d0213-f52f-47a2-9433-b64626ee0c94/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"A robin","height":3508,"width":2995,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/d68d0213-f52f-47a2-9433-b64626ee0c94/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/d68d0213-f52f-47a2-9433-b64626ee0c94","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":3508,"width":2995},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/d68d0213-f52f-47a2-9433-b64626ee0c94/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/d68d0213-f52f-47a2-9433-b64626ee0c94/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/d68d0213-f52f-47a2-9433-b64626ee0c94/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/logo"}
