The yellow wagtail looks upwards towards a passing crane fly or 'daddy longlegs'\n\nThe painting was gifted by Audubon to Mrs Hannah Mary Rathbone (1798 - 1878), wife of Richard Rathbone, as a gift for her hospitality. She was herself an able artist and published writer. The painting is inscribed with a dedication and verse beneath the image: \n\"To Mrs Hannah Mary Rathbone and with the following poem,\nThere is a joy, that oft my heart has known, \nThe secret haunts of nature to explore,\nTo hold Communion with myself alone,\nIn wilds, which man has never trod before.\nAnd well I love, at solitary night,\nTo hear the wailing Heron's plaintive cry,\nMy only lamp, the firefly's glowing light;\nMy only canopy, the fretted (?) sky!\nAnd on the mighty forest of the Wild,\nOft have I lov'd, beneath a hoary tree,\nProtected by its gloomy shade, to rest - \nFor nature's sterner charms have joys for me - \nWhat different scenes have England's shores displayed,\nHere nature wandering hard (?) no more I find,\nIn similar moods and trackless wilds betrayed,\nTill here I meet her beauties in thy mind.\nNor greater joy my soul desires to know.\nWhen, offering up this effort of my art,\nTo thee, to whom such grateful thanks I owe,\nI strive to paint the feelings of my heart - \""},{"label":"Repository","value":["Victoria Gallery and Museum"]},{"label":"Medium","value":"Pencil, pen, ink, watercolour, bodycolour with gum arabic on paper"},{"label":"Measurements","value":"H32.5cm x W40cm"},{"label":"More Information","value":"Scroll down for full metadata"}],"description":"Yellow and grey wagtails chasing a crane fly","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/9c6962de-4b39-40c0-83a8-82f2cc810c2c/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Yellow and grey wagtails chasing a crane fly","height":2828,"width":3508,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/9c6962de-4b39-40c0-83a8-82f2cc810c2c/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/9c6962de-4b39-40c0-83a8-82f2cc810c2c","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2828,"width":3508},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/9c6962de-4b39-40c0-83a8-82f2cc810c2c/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/9c6962de-4b39-40c0-83a8-82f2cc810c2c/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/9c6962de-4b39-40c0-83a8-82f2cc810c2c/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/liverpool/iiif/logo"}
