Smith provided a legend at upper right of areas explored first-hand or only heard about through reports by native populations. Staggered through the center of the map are the large black letters 'POWHATAN,' and that emperor is seen in his court to the left. Scholars believe that Smith's principal aim may have been to identify these well-organized indigenous kingdoms with the long-term objective of supplanting them by English colonization. The ninth state can be identified by the the spelling of \"Boolers bush\" on the map and the addition of three new place names: \"\"Blands C:\", \"Downes dale\" near the Bolus River, and \"Washeborne C:\" near Cape Charles. Appears as the folded frontispiece map in: A map of Virginia / by John Smith, printed in Oxford by Joseph Barnes, 1612. Bar scale given in leagues. Oriented with north at right. Legend at upper right explains the use of Maltese crosses to mark the extent of Smith's knowledge of the region; geographic details for areas beyond the crosses supplied by Indian sources, including the Powhatan Indians.
