An earlier Flemish map engraver, Jodocus Hondius Jr., had produced the plate for this map based on John Smith's 1618 version, testifying to its rapid popular appeal. When Hondius died, the plate was sold to Blaeu, who altered the imprint at bottom center with his own name.
