Langyao red is a type of high-fired red glaze that comes from the Jingdezhen kilns when they were supervised by Lang Tingji, the Governor of Jiangxi from 1705 to 1712, during the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty. Copies of vessels with the Langyao-red glaze were made during the successive Yongzheng and Qianlong reigns. A considerable number of replicas were also produced in the Republican period (1911-1949). It seems that this vase consists of two connected parts. The upper part comprises the neck and thus, the lower part includes the belly and the base. Consequently, a raised 'bowstring' circle is clearly seen around the joint. The upper neck is glazed in pale apple green with tiny darker green mottles. The interior of the vase and the bottom of the splayed concave base are in a grayish white glaze. The bottom rim of the base is unglazed, exposing the white body. This vase is dated to the Kangxi reign by Dr. Kramer, but its shape does not appear during this period when looking through the extant dated Kangxi vessels. The shape of this vase resembles more or less a late Qing vase with a long neck and famille rose decoration (p.200, from Li Zongyang's book titled zhongguo mingqing ciqi mulu < xia> < Catalogue of Chinese Ming and Qing Porcelain, vol.2) < Haikou: nanfang chubanshe, 2000> ), but they are still quite different. Actually the pale green-glazed upper neck demonstrates that this vase was produced after the Kangxi period because the Kangxi Langyao red-glazed vessels usually have a millet yellow top. Furthermore, the deliberately contrasting shade of the Langyao red glaze between the upper part and the lower part (especially the splayed foot) is actually distinctive of copies made during the Republican period. It was intended to imitate the natural flowing effect of the Langyao red glaze which makes the lower part darker. Evidently such an attempt was unsuccessful in this case.; Kuan Yin; Quan Yin"},{"label":"Title","value":"Langyao red-glazed (lang yao hong) vase"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
