Such a style of vase first appeared during the Yongzheng reign (1723-1735). It is recorded in Yongzheng Ji Shi Za Lu (Miscellaneous Notes of Events in the Yongzheng Reign): \"An imperial decree issued in the tenth month of the eighth year of the Yongzheng reign (1730) commissioned more of these vases for use as awards to officials.\" Such award vases continued to be produced in successive reigns beyond the Qianlong emperor. The neck is usually decorated with a band of continuous plantain leaves and the globular body with lotus scrolls. In Chinese the character for blue is (qing) and the character for lotus is (lian). The combination of the two is a pun on the message the emperor liked to convey to his officials: \"qing lian\" meaning \"clean and uncorrupted.\" This small blue and white award vase is exquisitely decorated with six registers of design in a blue underglaze. The first register on top of the slender neck depicts double-lined zigzag patterns against a background filled with oblique lines in corresponding directions. Below is a band of small cloud collars. Two vertically connected flowers with tassels are attached to the bottom of each cloud collar. The lower half of the neck is adorned with a band of continuous plantain leaves, followed by hui wen (key fret patterns). Around the shoulders are three evenly spaced reserved medallions of two adjoined floral sprays against a brocade background. The globular belly is primarily decorated with white chrysanthemum scrolls and man cao wen (coiling vine and leaf designs) on a blue background, alternated with three big stylized cloud collars. Within each cloud collar is a running auspicious monster with double horns and a snake-like body. This figure is surrounded by flames under a large blue ruyi-head shaped cloud on a white background. The two auspicious monsters are facing the same side while the central one is facing the opposite side. The chrysanthemum is a symbol of autumn and of fortitude; it blossoms in the fall despite \"the onslaught of frost and icy winds.\" It is also known as the hermit of flowers because of its association with Tao Qian (style name yuanming), a fourth-century poet-recluse who resigned his official post and retired to his small farm to write poetry. A number of his poems are about the chrysanthemum. On the base of the footring there is a reign mark \"da qing kang xi nian zhi\" (Made during the Kangxi Reign of the Great Qing; 1662-1722) in standard script, three columns and underglaze blue. The bottom rim of the footring is unglazed, exposing the buff body. It is evident that this small blue and white award vase is a later copy because of its apocryphal Kangxi reign mark and size. Just as mentioned above, the award vase did not appear until the Yongzheng reign, which comes after the Kangxi period. Furthermore, as far as is known, none of the extant genuine award vases bear an earlier reign mark than the Yongzheng period. Moreover, the size of this piece is much smaller than the extant pieces. Therefore, this small blue and white award should be a recent replica, probably produced during the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Nevertheless, it displays a good grade of workmanship and is well decorated."},{"label":"Title","value":"Small blue and white award vase (shang ping)"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
