Ancient bronze vessel forms were rendered in jade as a sign of the new development in Chinese jade carving of the late Qing period. The overall design is symmetrical. On the center surface of the vase is an openwork carving of a bold standing phoenix perching on a peony branch and resting its head against the curved neck of the vase. The feathers are meticulously carved with shallow incised lines in different patterns. The lid finial is fashioned in an identical but smaller phoenix. The two birds turn their heads opposite directions, lending balance to the entire composition. The traditional \"phoenix and peony\" motif stands for wealth, happiness, and prosperity.* It is also said that the legendary phoenix (or feng huang) appears only in times of peace and prosperity. The etymology of the name feng huang implies that it is the emperor of all birds. Often praised in Chinese literature and art for its beauty and formerly employed by the Empresses of China, the auspicious bird has been a favorite decorative motif for ceremonial costumes, or as a beautiful ornament for a lady's head-dress. The jade carver probably tried to make this piece representational. * Other common patterns are \"phoenix blowing peony\", \"peony and phoenix facing sun\", etc."},{"label":"Title","value":"Large ornamental vase with cover"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
