Under its previous leadership the Union Army of the Potomac would have retreated after some of the costly battles like Spotsylvania or Cold Harbor. However, Grant continued to pursue Lee and wear down his forces through attrition. The losses that Lee sustained are represented in the cartoon by the Confederate messenger who is continually lossing appendages until he needs to be carried in a basket. Though Lee and his army would defend the fortifications around Petersburg and Richmond for nine more months, the carnage of the Overland Campaign left them as a smaller and weaker shell of their former selves."},{"label":"Alternate Title","value":"Lee's messenger sent to Richmond with the news. All that remains of Lee's messenger is carried by darkey in a handbasket."},{"label":"Date","value":"D:00 M:07 Y:1864"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"July 1864"},{"label":"Title","value":"Rebel Bulletins Illustrated"},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p4016coll2/id/1671"}],"description":"Rebel Bulletins Illustrated","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/f1b29316-be41-46b1-a68f-82491b32c128/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Rebel Bulletins Illustrated","height":2886,"width":3711,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/f1b29316-be41-46b1-a68f-82491b32c128/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/f1b29316-be41-46b1-a68f-82491b32c128","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2886,"width":3711},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/f1b29316-be41-46b1-a68f-82491b32c128/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/f1b29316-be41-46b1-a68f-82491b32c128/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/f1b29316-be41-46b1-a68f-82491b32c128/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
