On one side, there is an inscription which reads shan shui qing quán shí shàng líu (from the mountain river the azure stream flows on rocks) by Wén Zhen, in grass style or swift style or cao shu. The inscription reinforces the message of the image on the other side that displays a traditional image of a river and mountain or shan shui of a little cottage by a stream and under a pine tree. The top of the frame is surmounted by fine swirling striations around clouds in the rui form. A small register with a simplified form of the key pattern adorns the bottom of the plaque. From the Ming dynasty, jade was no longer reserved for the fashioning of simple ritual objects, but used for many practical items such as personal ornaments. With its unique and beautiful effects, it offered artists many opportunities to create works of originality and interpret traditional forms. It also inspired artists to express themselves. The jade carver of this plaque took advantage of the natural color of jade in order to accentuate the intricacy and beauty of his creation. The diagonal light brown markings of the jade color enhance the beauty of the white jade; they echo the rhythm of the inscription of slow streaming water on rocks and promote a sense of antiquity. One can actually examine the quality of the jade texture through a good light source and immediately appreciate the inscription of well wishes on the other side of the plaque. The carving style is typical of the Ming period: delicate, elegant, and simple. As James Watt notes, the use of images as illustrations for auspicious sayings was a development of the Ming, and was particularly common on jade pendant plaques.* * See James Watt, Chinese Jades from Han to Qing."},{"label":"Title","value":"Ornamental pendant plaque with inscriptions"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
