Manjushri Bodhisattva is the embodiment of great wisdom (Sanskrit language: prajna). In this carving the Bodhisattva Manjushri is depicted in a female form. Her headdress is in the form of a sheng crown, which is often shaped on a transverse rod with discs at its ends. She wears a stylized long sleeved silk garment and a flapping sash. Her right hand holds a tall vase with the immortal stem of Ju-i (or scepter), which represents the mystic lotus in Buddhism. It is a symbol of Buddha and his teaching, which is said to shed brilliant light on all surrounding beings. It also represents a kind of blunt sword, a symbol of wisdom and virtue that has the power to clear ignorance and darkness. She is riding a golden-mane lion, a symbol of the uncompromising radiance of prajna. The lion is the king of the beasts and is fearless; it symbolizes the great power of wisdom. Similarly, Manjusri Bodhisattva teaches the dharma without fear, like the lion's roar. Sometimes, the golden-mane lion is replaced by a green lion which symbolizes the wild mind that can only be transformed by meditation.
