It may have lost some of its conventional spiritual power established in the early dynasties. Jade became a luxurious material to indicate secular power. Archaic jade vessels were used for decorative purposes in the Chinese aristocrats' households as a statement of their social status. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi, the aesthetic character and style of jade carvings were more robust, yet very detailed and sophisticated with the revival of the pierced carving type. Numerous objects with distinctive floral designs were obviously being inspired by the works of the Ming Dynasty. The overall oval shape of this small circular cup with two complicated openwork handles suggests that this altar vessel was entirely carved from a jade boulder. Although the stems, blossoms, buds, and leaves are stylishly executed, the Cherry flower motif- emblematic of protection and female beauty and charm-does not lose its natural organic finesse. The translucency of the pure white jade decisively defines the elegance of the object.
