A model of Byzantine architecture, the domed basilica was originally constructed as a Christian place of worship under Roman emperor Justinian in the 6th century by architect Isidoros of Miletus. Over time, parts of the structure were reconstructed to repair earthquake damage, and buttresses were added in the 13th and 14th centuries. The structure was later converted to a mosque (Aya Sofy Camii) by Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II in the 15th century.
