The photograph shows the orchestra, the round area where the chorus and would perform, and tiers of seats (Theatron) built into the side of a hill and separated into sections by radial staircases. The stone theatre replaced earlier temporary versions of the theatre comprised of wooden benches and stage building. The stone structure was constructed in the 4th century BC, under the statesman Lykourgos. Modifications and additions were made frequently in later antiquity, leaving very little of the original theatre. Greek open air theater emerged from rituals that took place at the altar of Dionysus at the temple, which eventually expanded and moved to the hillside theatres.
