The piece seems to be very old, judging by the smoothness of wear on the lower half (where the object was held), and discoloration from the oil of human hands. The smoothness does not indicate a lack of skill, considering the carved detail on the top half of the figure. The head of the figure, which includes the detailed beard and eye brows, carved expression on the face, and purposely bulbous head, shows us that the artist was very talented. The flaps on the official's hat are carved with the Chinese symbol of longevity. The figure holds a tablet in his hands, which was used to take memorandum while meeting with the emperor, and sports a belt which extends around his body. This object was meant to be seen from both front and back. The accompanying wooden stand is built to accommodate the slightly curved base of the figure. Notice that the figure is curved much like the curve of an ivory tusk."},{"label":"Title","value":"Ivory figure"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
