Her hairstyle and long garment clearly demonstrate her social status of high class. However, there is no flower or decorative hairpin on her hair to indicate A'Kiao as a major concubine. She wears an enveloping robe that falls in u-shaped folds down the front and the back, and is tied with a long elegant sash. The hands are beautifully carved in the shape of a lotus petal. There is no hint of her silk slippers. Her indiscrete smile and sense of self-contentment suggest that she might have been entertaining the emperor (and the empresses). Because of her dancing movement and position-with two arms raised on her right side-this type of figure is sometimes referred to as si xi ren, a person who enjoys the four blessings of happiness: high official position, longevity, and good luck.* The figure is well carved with a standard beauty. It carries some characteristics of the Qianlong artistic style: the choice of white jade in carving human figures, low relief decorated carving with intricate lines on smooth surface, good understanding of the body proportion, fine hair lines, and some facial expressions. This carving can be dated to early Qing period. *Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing (Chicago: Art Media Resources, Ltd., 2002) p. 379."},{"label":"Title","value":"Statuette of A'Kiao, Wife of the Emperor Wu Ti of the Han Dynasty"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
