Authorized by the Board of Trustees and hired by the faculty in 1847 at a salary of $15 per month, Hopkins served in this capacity until his death in 1868. In addition to his main duties of caring for the campus grounds and Penn Hall, Hopkins was also responsible for the ringing of the bell, cleaning the rooms, and keeping the classroom fires going. He was one of the few black property owners in Gettysburg at the time of the Battle, and fled in June of that year with many other black residents for fear of being taken by the Confederates and brought back South and into slavery. Especially endeared by the campus body, he was the subject of a poem, Jack the Janitor, written by one of the students, and upon his death, the students and faculty attended his funeral."},{"label":"Subject","value":["Janitor"]},{"label":"Creator","value":["Tyson Brothers, Gettysburg, PA"]},{"label":"Date","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1862"},{"label":"Title","value":"Hopkins - John Hopkins (1862)"},{"label":"Identifier","value":"GCP_13626"},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p4016coll11/id/63"}],"description":"Hopkins - John Hopkins (1862)","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/de2e5d1c-b492-4690-9422-fe9c1bebc2cd/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Hopkins - John Hopkins (1862)","height":1526,"width":1220,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/de2e5d1c-b492-4690-9422-fe9c1bebc2cd/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/de2e5d1c-b492-4690-9422-fe9c1bebc2cd","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1526,"width":1220},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/de2e5d1c-b492-4690-9422-fe9c1bebc2cd/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/de2e5d1c-b492-4690-9422-fe9c1bebc2cd/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/de2e5d1c-b492-4690-9422-fe9c1bebc2cd/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
