Both Britain and France wished to increase commerce with the United States hoping to profit off the sale of war goods, but the foreign policy of both countries impeded the US government's willingness to answer these overtures. Both countries gave non-diplomatic support to the Confederacy throughout the war. France also overthrew the government of Mexico and inserted a new monarch, a move that the US was opposed to.
