The ivory lid is the most intricate part of the object, and that is why it is classified as an ivory and not a wooden object. The cage is in the shape of a gourd, which is a common shape which would usually be used in the winter months. There seems to be a lattice pattern carved in ivory which serves as screen to allow air and light into the cage. One can really notice the ivory grain on the lid.
