An Englishman (who was wealthy and a collector of jades in his own name and whose father had bought jades from Dr. Nott's father), had to get money to meet the hard times in England. With the consent of the British government, he brought his jades over to get U.S. dollars, very important for England now. Dr. Nott had those pieces on display. Some had already been disposed of. Only the smaller pieces were within our reach financially. I (Kramer) figured: here is a well-known collection. There will not be many opportunities like this to get a number of fine pieces. Instead of buying a piece at a time, as I have had money since Dr. Nott would give us time, it would be better to get a number of pieces at once. They were disappearing rapidly as we could see when we called back at a few days' interval. So we got...our items before we left the metropolitan vicinity for home."},{"label":"Part of","value":["Asian Art GettDigital Collection"]},{"label":"Provenance","value":"The Estate of Prof. Frank Kramer"},{"label":"Genre","value":["Artifacts"]},{"label":"Object Location","value":"J.5"},{"label":"Date","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1875 - D:00 M:00 Y:1925"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"Late 19th-early 20th century CE"},{"label":"Era","value":["Qing dynasty"]},{"label":"Measurement","value":"Diameter: 5.8 cm; Thickness: 4 mm"},{"label":"Medium","value":["Light green jade, good translucency, highly polished","Jade"]},{"label":"Country of Origin","value":["China"]},{"label":"Description","value":"This thin ornamental plaque is carved in openwork. It has a rim adorned with the ju-i head pattern on its surface (sometimes called the \"recumbent silkworm\" design). It is connected to an inner circle with eight knots*. The movable center or hub or \"button\" is carved in the form of the stylized Chinese character of \"longevity\". The edge and the surface of the rim are adorned with a conventional cloud motif. Both sides of the carving are identical. Its smooth surface and individualized style represents the distinctive and exceptional Qianlong jade carving style. This piece was probably among the jade objects produced in the late 19th century in large quantities to meet the demand of public and private collections."},{"label":"Title","value":"Light green jade prayer wheel"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
