It is said that chrysanthemum blossoms, one of the most chosen of Japanese flowers and a favorite theme for decorations, have been evolved from the simple daisy. Just like the sun is Japanese national emblem, the sixteen-petaled chrysanthemum has been the Imperial crest from ancient times. It is the most deeply loved and respected of all flowers, not only for its beauty but for its patriotic significance. The surface of this oblong box is elegantly adorned with two clusters of sixteen-petaled chrysanthemum or kiku. Its asymmetrical design leaves room for negative spaces, enhancing the elegance of the chrysanthemum motif that overflows to the rims of the box. This box is a fine example of Japanese lacquer technique called Roiro shishiai togidashi maki-e: Roiro gives a shiny black finish. Maki-e is the basis of Japanese lacquer technique (\" sprinkled lacquer\" ), with sprinkles of gold and silver and sparer painterly designs. With togidashi, metallic pigmented powders are applied to the design, then more lacquer coats and the whole ground down to give a level burnished look.
