This Satsuma vase fits into the established tradition of Japanese export black and gold porcelain during this period. A characteristic feature of the cultural interaction between Asia and East Europe in the 18th century was the adaptation of European shapes and techniques and Oriental wares. The ornamental designs are filled with naturalistic scenes of figures among flowers, birds, and landscapes. This fine vase has a marvelous bulbous form with a raised gold pattern on a strikingly thin layer of strong black lacquer. Its symmetrical form is adorned with finely detailed genre painting in landscape. On one side is a depiction of village people and children in their everyday life activities: Women seated on a verandah looking outside; a family with a husband, a wife and their children enjoying a beautiful day by a lake; and at a far distance, a couple in intimate conversation. On the other side is a lakeside village with thatched huts, ducks bathing in the stream, and cherry flowers in bloom. The plum and cherry symbolize beauty, longevity, purity and most of all the ever-changing four seasons. The applied glaze and all these motives conform to the expectations of the western audience and collectors who regarded Oriental art as something exotic. The Japanese artists, like their Chinese counterpart, were not very concerned about the Western perspective in painting. In fact, most of their works are in multi-perspective: all elements in painting-people and landscape-are seen from all angles. Furthermore, proportion was not the artist's apprehension; for instance, ducks are painted larger than the huts. The cloud-like register around the neck and the remainder all over space of the vase are decorated with geometric kimono designs, a profusion of various stylized flowers and birds. All are finely detailed in old, raised gold. Two other registers at the base of the vase also have geometric and floral motives. With its controlling sense of total balance, shape, and design, this decorative Satsuma vase was purely for the trading industry of the time. It fits into the established tradition of Japanese exported black and gold porcelain during the period of the 18th to the 19th century."},{"label":"Title","value":"Satsuma vase"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
