The temple was built under Pericles beginning in 447 BC to honor goddess Athena Parthenos, protector of the city of Athens. Architects were Ictinus and Callicrates (also Kallikrates). Sculptor Phidias created the statue of Athena housed in the temple and was probably responsible for the design of the building's elaborate sculpture honoring gods and heroes, including carved metopes, cella, and pediments. The temple, known for its exceptional quality and aesthetic balance, is in the Doric order with eight columns on the end (octostyle) and seventeen on the sides. The Parthenon was later converted into an orthodox church and then a mosque.
