He is inquiring whether his master sees any sympathy coming to which the reply is \"Nary a bit!!\" Published in December of 1862, the war had recently adopted a greater emphasis on the question of slavery after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in September (though it would not go into effect until January). The four military forces in the cartoon illustrate several offensive actions by the Union forces that represent this renewed war effort with emancipation as its new emphasis. Closest to the Southerner in Richmond is Burnside's Army of the Potomac. In reserve to the left is the XI Corps under Franz Sigel. Shown further away, Foster's expedition was an offensive against the Carolina coast and the Corcoran League was involved in actions against Suffolk in Southern Virginia. Though both the Foster expedition and the Corcoran League saw successes in the winter of 1862-63, the Army of the Potomac was soundly defeated at the Battle of Fredericksburg.
