She also wears a stylized long sleeved silk garment and a flapping sash. The hem of her close-fitting garment spreads out around her feet. Her right hand carries a lingzhi mushroom, which confers immortality (one of the eight emblems of the Taoist Immortals). Her left hand stretches out and holds a branch of blossoms that charmingly garlands her contour. These motifs are principal ways of identifying the deity. She bends forward and her head is inclined. Although this carving is listed by the dealer (B. Altman Co. in 1940) as Guanyin, it is indeed a representation of the Queen Mother of the West or Xi Wang Mu (Guanyin figures have never been portrayed in a dancing posture; nor does she pose in profile). The image of the Bodhisattva usually has a small Amitabha Buddha in her headdress symbolizing that she, like her original male predecessor, is regarded as a manifestation of Amitabha Buddha.) Based on the three-dimensional carving style that suggests a realistic form, the figurine may belong to the Qianlong period.; Kuan Yin; Quan Yin"},{"label":"Title","value":"Queen Mother of the West or Xi Wang Mu"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
