For this reason the writing around Lincoln's head says \"Union nominee\" since he was made the candidate for this party. The disruption of Davis's \"breakfast\" by the cannonball symbolizes the trouble that the possibility of Lincoln's re-election represented. His re-election carried a resolution to continuing the war and reuniting the Union. Juxtaposed to the peace platform of the Democratic Party, the prospect of the National Union Party winning the election would be a major blow to a continuing Southern war effort. The fact that such an alliance of political parties as represented by the National Union Party could succeed in uniting over a candidate was not a good sign for Davis or his Confederate government."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Unknown"]},{"label":"Alternate Title","value":"Jeff Davis's breakfast spoilt by a shot from Baltimore."},{"label":"Date","value":"D:02 M:07 Y:1864"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"1864-07-02;"},{"label":"Title","value":"The Hardest Shell Yet"},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p4016coll2/id/234"}],"description":"The Hardest Shell Yet","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/cb31f6c3-4191-4b59-b4c0-ebf3ea393389/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"The Hardest Shell Yet","height":2597,"width":2322,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/cb31f6c3-4191-4b59-b4c0-ebf3ea393389/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/cb31f6c3-4191-4b59-b4c0-ebf3ea393389","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2597,"width":2322},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/cb31f6c3-4191-4b59-b4c0-ebf3ea393389/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/cb31f6c3-4191-4b59-b4c0-ebf3ea393389/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/cb31f6c3-4191-4b59-b4c0-ebf3ea393389/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
